Ellen's Energy Adventure

Return to Future World East Attractions

The Story: One day while watching Jeopardy! in her apartment, Ellen is visited by her neighbor Bill Nye the Science Guy. Ellen soon realizes that her old college roommate, Stupid Judy, is an expert on energy and competing on the show. Naturally after falling asleep Ellen has a nightmare that she is on Jeopardy! competing against Stupid Judy and Albert Einstein and all the questions deal with energy.

Ellen, not being a fan of energy, gets all of the questions in the first round incorrect with the exception of the final question she asks, "Is this a nightmare or what?" She then realizes that since it is her dream she has control over it. Bill Nye shows up and points out that he'll help her for double jeopardy, but needs to take her back to the creation of the world. Bill takes her to several locations all the way from the age of the dinosaurs to the Hoover Dam to show how energy makes the world go round.

In the end, Ellen comes back to show off her new knowledge and beats Stupid Judy in final jeopardy!

The History: Prior to Ellen's Energy Adventure, the Universe of Energy pavilion was set up similar to how it is set up today, but approached the idea of educating guests about energy in a whole different way. The opening day attraction would talk about energy from an educational viewpoint unlike the humor based approach we see in the attraction today.

By the mid 90s both Disney and the sponsor, Exxon, decided to change up the storyline. With Ellen DeGeneres gaining popularity among adults, and Bill Nye the Science Guy being popular among children, the two paired up to become the stars of the new version of the attraction. Since they were already putting a lot of star power into the new format they began to recruit other celebrities like Alex Trebek (Jeopardy! host), Jamie Lee Curtis (Stupid Judy), and Michael Richards (Discoverer of fire) among others.

Universe of Energy: Ellen's Energy Adventure opened on September 15, 1996.
