Journey Into Imagination

Return to Future World West Attractions

The Story: You've been invited to a unique opportunity: The Imagination Institute's open house! We are greeted by the chairman, Dr. Nigel Channing (played by Eric Idle) who explains how we will be exploring the five senses. Unfortunately for him, Figment shows up and takes it upon himself to help with the tour. While traveling through sound, sight, and smell, Dr. Channing finally throws in the white flag to end the open house. Figment, excited by the news, decides to invite us to his open house instead: his house, but upside down! Dr. Channing finally begins to realize what imagination is all about and joins Figment in a rendition of One Little Spark!

Height Restriction: N/A
Attraction Length: 6 minutes
Fastpass? None

The History: While the planning stages for EPCOT Center were in motion, Tony Baxter, the Imagineer responsible for Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, Splash Mountain, Indiana Jones Adventure, and more, and Steven Kirk created the idea of a trip through a person's imagination. The name? Journey Into Imagination!

The attraction became an Epcot favorite to several guests and the main character in the show, Figment (as in Figment of Imagination) became the unofficial Epcot park mascot. The attraction, which opened March 5, 1983, would take guests through several rooms with Figment and Dreamfinder, while exploring all forms of the Imagination. Unfortunately in 1998 the attraction closed down with plans for a new overall storyline.

When the attraction opened the following year in 1999, it was renamed Journey into YOUR Imagination. The storyline changed to have a connection to the adjacent Honey, I Shrunk the Audience attraction by using Dr. Nigel Channing (the host of the 3-D attraction) as the host of a trip through our imaginations.

Unfortunately, Dreamfinder disappeared completely and Figment made a very small cameo which understandably made several guests upset. With several complaints coming in this version of the attraction closed in 2001 and would reopen the following year to its current state, Journey Into Imagination with Figment! While the attraction still isn't nearly as popular as the original, guests were happy to see the return of Figment in the attraction. It has remained unchanged since.

Journey Into Imagination with Figment reopened in its current state on June 2, 2002.

Fun Facts: While passing all the doors in the queue line, make sure to pay attention to the names on them! There actually is meaning behind all of them and you can learn all about it here!

While walking through the line you can find a few props from actual live action Disney films! Two of them are from the Honey, I Shrunk the Kids trilogy, while another is from the 90s film, Flubber!

Location: The Imagination Pavilion.

Touring Tips: The attraction typically has very little line (if any line at all). The best time to visit is early in the morning or shortly before 7 (when the attraction closes with parts of Future World).
