Fun Find Friday
June 3, 2011
Location: Tomorrowland, Magic Kingdom

 |
The Tomorrowland Speedway. It's an attraction often
overlooked by veteran WDW travelers. Most guests have their
first driving experience at this iconic attraction, and in
return receiver their first ever Driver's License!
So what about this attraction qualifies as a Fun Find for
this week? Am I revealing the hidden curves where you can
strike the car in front of you and not be seen or the secret
of how to keep the pedal to the metal without coming out
with a sore leg?
Actually, it has to do with the picture to the left.
The attraction opened with the park on October 1, 1971 as
the Grand Prix Raceway. In 1988 the attraction had a refurb
to be shortened for the addition of Mickey's Birthdayland.
With this refurb the name was changed to the Tomorrowland
Indy Speedway.
Eventually, Disney teamed up with the Indianapolis Motor
Speedway and new additions were added to the attraction. Two
of them will be saved for future Friday's, but today we are
going to talk about the placement stand that is towering
over the track in the picture to the left. |
When looking at the placement stand you may notice
that there are 33 possible places to be in during the race. When I
first saw that I was quite puzzled on why Disney would choose such a
random number (race car fans, I apologize in advance since you most
likely already know the connection). After some research I realized
that every Indy 500 there are 33 cars in the race (11 rows of 3 cars
each).
Because of this, Disney and the Indianapolis Motor
Speedway thought it would be a good homage to the Indy 500 by
placing 33 different places here as well! When the name changed to
Tomorrowland Speedway in 2008, the decision was made to keep these
hidden secrets around for racing (and Disney) fans to find on future
trips.
I know what you're thinking: "What is that orange
car driving over?" Well my friends, that answer will be revealed on
another Fun Find Friday!
