Fun Find Friday

November 11, 2011

Location: Disney's Yacht Club Resort

We've spent a lot of time talking about Fun Finds found throughout the parks, but we haven't nearly covered enough Fun Finds at the resorts. I know, "Are there a lot of Fun Finds in the resorts though?" To quote Papa Bear Baloo, "You better believe it!"

Let's head over to the Yacht Club where everything has taken on a more nautical theme. We have discussed the elevators here in the past, but today we are going to be taking a look at the lobby area. Just after entering through the main entrance you will be greeted by a giant globe of the Earth. Directly behind this is a nice seating area. While sitting around and admiring the amazing ship models in the glass cases behind the couches you may begin to forget that you are in Walt Disney World where a mouse runs the place.

Don't worry though! Mickey is present even in this ship-inspired environment! If you pay close attention to your surroundings you will realize that there are a few couches, chairs, and end tables present. If you take a look at one of the end tables here you will find six "drawers" with six different names written upon them. We'll get to that in a future Fun Find! However, if you look at the end table that is kiddy corner from that you'll find six more "drawers" with names written upon them:

Here you can see that Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Daisy, Huey, and Goofy all have their own personal drawers located here. I know what you are thinking. If there are six drawers, why no Pluto? Pluto, being a dog, has no real need for a drawer. Granted, he could keep his bones or chew toys in there, but Disney decided to opt for a Disney character that could actually have more use for the drawer.

So why Huey? There are so many great classic Disney characters to chose from, and if you are going to pick one of Donald's nephews, why not pick all of them? The main reason Huey was chosen was due to the time the resort actually opened up. When the Yacht Club opened, November of 1990, DuckTales was just finishing up its run on television. With the popularity of the show, and Donald's nephews, still being around, Huey (who is sometimes considered the leader of the trio) was given the honor of having his very own drawer at this brand new resort!
