New Fantasyland

Three Years of Waiting by Brent Dodge

Back in September 2009 my life was headed in a brand new direction. I had just begun to do a Disney podcast and people actually were listening to what I had to say. I had already planned to attend the D23 Expo, but now I had even more reason to go. I had a chance to share what was occurring in California for my (most likely five) loyal fans.

While there an announcement was made that made me extremely excited. Fantasyland in the Magic Kingdom was going to double in size! Being a former Cast Member that worked in Fantasyland I had mixed feelings about this announcement. It was great that the park was growing, but how was this going to affect my beloved home?

As the presentation went on I began to realize how much potential was here, though. Just look at the map above (first leaked a few months before the Expo). The new area had so much in store: Pixie Hollow, a Little Mermaid and Cinderella attraction, A Be Our Guest Restaurant and so much more! There was so much to do it was mind blowing!

Shortly after the announcement, however, news began to spread and Disney caught attention of what people were saying: Why was this a girl themed area? Fantasyland isn't just focused around princesses. What about boys?

Because of that, they went back to the drawing table and realized things like the Aurora meet and greet may not be the biggest crowd pleaser for the male audience. In fact, Cinderella, Ariel, Belle, and Pixie Hollow may not either. They then began to pick and choose what would work and what wouldn't work. The idea of having a Beauty and the Beast themed area, flag shipped with a Be Our Guest Restaurant was an obvious choice for what should stay. The Little Mermaid attraction was already being developed in Disney's California Adventure, so that should stay as well.

It was soon decided that a Cinderella and Aurora area may not be the greatest ideas, but what should go in their place? A Seven Dwarfs Mine Ride was decided upon, but because of this an opening day attraction would need to disappear for one simple reason: Snow White can't be in two places at the same time. This would result in the closing of Snow White's Scary Adventures on May 31, 2012:

Now with the whole Pixie Hollow idea being taken off the board, it was decided that Dumbo wouldn't be located where they originally planned, but placed closer to the Speedway. With this plan in place, they decided to retheme part of the expansion (mainly the portion located where Toontown was located) as Storybook Circus! This would give Tinker Bell and her friends a more permanent location over in Adventureland:

At the same time, the Seven Dwarfs Mine Ride was going to be massive so part of the Winnie the Pooh area, Pooh's Playful Spot, would have to be closed as well. The first wall would be put up April 13, 2010 while closing down Pooh's Playful Spot, Ariel's Grotto, and Scuttle's Landing.

As a result to this, Mr. Sanders Tree, found in Pooh's Playful Spot would be moved to the entrance of The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh. Luckily for Pooh, the absence of keeping Pooh's Playful Spot ended up being a huge blessing in disguise since it would then go on and receive a new interactive queue!

In February, 2011, Toontown welcomed its final guests to the area shortly before Mickey, Minnie, and Donald closed up their houses one last time while searching for some new real estate. Goofy, however, got lucky, but went through an identity crisis by becoming The Great Goofini!

Throughout it all walls would be put up, castles would be built, elephants moved, and a whole lot more!

Eventually the sun would set on Dumbo's original home, but soon he, Casey Jr., and the Great Goofini would open up Storybook Circus in March to huge success!

Eventually, just a few weeks ago, the Castle walls were released...

And here we are, at the sunset of the Great Fantasyland Expansion that has been three years in the making. Here at we are extremely excited to be covering every inch of it. Below you will find links to every one of our current links (from restaurants to shops to attractions and more). I hope you enjoy!
