Fun Find Friday

January 2, 2015

Location: Main Street, USA

"Everybody has a laughing place. Trouble is, most folks won't take the time to go look for it and where it is for one might not be for another." - Uncle Remus in Song of the South

At the end of Main Street, USA, guests can find one of the greatest sights in all of Walt Disney World. No, I'm not talking about Cinderella Castle. At the end of the street guests come face to face with Walt Disney and Mickey Mouse who, hand in hand, welcome guests to their own magical kingdom.

Partners statue

While so many of us have viewed this statue at one point or another in the Magic Kingdom or Disneyland, or even the actual Walt Disney Studios in Burbank, there are a few details to this statue that often go unnoticed. Today we are going to be taking a look at the tie tack that is found on Walt Disney.

Smoke Tree Ranch

At first glance, the symbol here appears to be a Chinese symbol: possibly the symbol for imagination, creativity or simply happiness. While those would all be good guesses, it is actually the symbol for Smoke Tree Ranch. Smoke Tree Ranch, located in Palm Springs, California, was the location where Walt Disney built two homes throughout the years with the first one being built in 1949. He eventually sold the house just a few years later  in order to help fund Disneyland.

His second home on Smoke Tree Ranch was a regular vacation destination for him and he eventually became part of the Smoke Tree Ranch committee. His love for the Ranch was so strong that he got WED Enterprises (now known as Walt Disney Imagineering) to help design some of the cottages on the property!

So how does this tie in with the Uncle Remus quote found at the start of today's article? Well, it was often said that Walt Disney's own Laughing Place was at Smoke Tree Ranch! Due to this, he was often found with his Smoke  Tree Ranch tie tack on representing his favorite piece of heaven on earth.

So going into this new year, make sure you, like Walt, visit your laughing place wherever it may be. Here's to a happy and healthy 2015 everyone!
