Fun Find Friday

August 19, 2016

Location: Adventureland, Magic Kingdom

As we have discussed several times in the past, sometimes scattered throughout the park, Imagineers will leave their mark on the park by hiding their initials, birth stones, or in this week's case, their favorite hobby, in plain sight while unsuspecting guests walk right past.

While walking through the Fastpass queue for Pirates of the Caribbean, you may have noticed these two guys:

Pirates of the Caribbean chess

Yes, they are pirates. Yes, they are playing chess. Yes, there is more to this story than meets the eye. Let's start off by talking about the predicament that the pirates have gotten themselves into? The pirates are in a perpetual check, or at least they are meant to be. In the original rendering for the scene (both here and in Disneyland) the chessboard was set up to a difficult setup where both players could continue to move their pieces, but neither would be able to win: a perpetual check. Essentially, the two prisoner pirates died while trying to beat the other in a game of chess.

So how does this get back to the Imagineer signature? Marc Davis, one of the main Imagineers on the project, was an avid chess fan. Due to this, Marc Davis at times would hide chess pieces in various projects he worked on due to his love of the game!
